The debate now seems to be dead.

For many years surgeons around the world have argued on the most appropriate approach for hip replacement surgery. Many advocates of the anterior approach would make claims that it was the better and safer approach with far fewer problems for recovery. However rigorous scientific studies have now concluded that the anterior approach has more early complications, there are more fractures and longer operative times. There is also slower return to work and no benefit in pain relief at the six month mark. It seems therefore that the posterior approach to the hip is a better approach. The key however to any hip replacement is the surgeon and the early rehabilitation. Therefore if the early rehabilitation program is adopted it is that that gives the benefit.
